Creative Writing: Tea With the Fellowship (Character Conversation)
“Bah! I don’t see why we have to waste money on horses,” complained Gimli.
“You could always walk to Mordor. I’m sure you could keep up with the rest of us,” replied Legolas with a light smile.
“Hmph! A dwarf could outlast a horse any day,” retorted Gimli, “We be creatures of massive endurance.”
“Let’s see here. 290,291,292. Ah!” exclaimed Gandalf, “Here it is, 293 Moss Lane. Come along gentlemen, these horses won’t buy themselves, and we are on a tight schedule.” Gandalf then lightly rapped his staff against the door.
Gimli examined the building they had stopped at and turned to Gandalf. “You sure this is the right place wizard? It seems more like a home than a stable.”
“Indeed it is master dwarf, but there is a purpose in coming here, as you shall see in a few moments.” A few seconds later the door opened to reveal a servant.
“The master has been expecting you. He is currently enjoying tea in the garden. Please follow me.” The servant proceeded to lead the way through the house. Upon entering the yard, a young man jumped up from his chair and came towards the group.
“Gandalf my good fellow it hasn’t been long enough!” cried the stranger.
“Oh it hasn’t, has it?” answered Gandalf.
“Indeed not, I have hardly had any time to look back on our previous encounter with fond feelings. You can’t expect a fellow to remember a memory that happened less than a year ago with nostalgic feelings. ”
“Nonsense, I look back on what I had for breakfast this morning with nostalgia.”
“I suppose it depends on what one eats then. I would hardly look back on my lunch I had no more than half an hour ago as a fond memory, but then again I have always been more of a supper person. Ah! How rude of me, let me introduce myself to your companions. My name is Algernon.”
“These two are Legolas, son of Thranduil, and Gimli, son of Glóin. They are joining me on a journey. I was hoping you might supply us with horses as you have kindly done in the past.”
“Before we discuss business, how about some tea and snacks? I’m absolutely famished.”
“Tea! We don’t have time to sit around sipping brown water!” railed Gimli, “We are in a rush here boy! Right Gandalf?”
“Actually I could go for a spot of tea myself,” responded Gandalf.
“W-What!” spluttered Gimli, “You said it yourself, we be in a hurry!”
Chuckling to himself, Legolas said “Oh come on Gimli, don’t be such a stubborn mule. Accept his offer; we won’t have many chances of rest on the road.” Muttering darkly to himself Gimli unhappily accepted a chair and sat with everyone.
“So tell me my good wizard, what is happening in the world now?” inquired Algernon.
“Dark times are coming,” Gandalf said with a grave look on his face.
“I shall have to get some more lamps then.”
“Things are stirring that haven’t seen the light of day in centuries.”
“It’s about time. One really shouldn’t spend too much time doing in the dark. A little sun does wonders for the body. I’m always telling old Bunbury that.”
“Who is this Bunbury?” asked Legolas.
“A tragic fellow really, he is a fatally ill companion of mine. He can’t seem to stay healthy for long. He wishes that I be at his side when he finally passes. Why just this year I missed several family events due to Bunbury being on his deathbed.”
“Aye, that makes you a true friend lad. That Bunbury fellow is lucky to have such a caring companion,” said Gimli.
“Oh, I’m sure that Algernon is grateful for knowing him,” commented Legolas, who had a knowing smile on his face. Gandalf who had been sipping tea, stood up
“Now I’m glad to have chatted with you Algernon, but we must be going. A wizard can’t be late.”
“Of course my good fellow, come I’ll lead you to the horses.”
